Chapter 12

Hope

It was unusually warm for spring today, and as I sat watching baseball practice, I thought I might melt into the bleachers. Jake’s team is in this tournament next week, and his coach has been holding practices every afternoon, and on the weekends, to prepare. I’d hoped that I’d have at least one Saturday to clean and do things around the house, but no such luck so far.

I watched as Jake threw another pitch. It came out of his hand wrong, and as it crossed the plate, he shook his head. I knew the signs. He wasn’t happy with himself. I’ve seen him be extra hard on himself over the years, and it seems that the older he gets, the worse it is. He turned, kicked at the dirt on the mound, and growled. His coach came jogging out. He put his arm around his shoulders and offered words of encouragement. It was moments like this that I wished with all my heart that Ethan was here. Jake has had good coaches over the years, but these are the moments where his dad should be here.

Jake nodded, and got back into position on the mound. He kicked at the dirt, rolled the ball in his fingers, and then wound up. The popping sound it made hitting the catcher’s glove told me it was a good fastball. Jake’s mouth curved into a wide grin. His coach nodded, and all was right again. Well, except for this heat. I wiped at my forehead, and decided to get a drink from the concession stand.

As I trekked across the grass, my phone buzzed with a text.
